Skoda is gearing up for an electric future in India, aiming to create affordable electric vehicles (EVs) that are made locally. They want to succeed in the Indian market by focusing on localization. Skoda’s plan is to produce EVs that are both budget-friendly for Indian consumers and have export potential. While specific details about the car’s size and price are not clear yet, it’s anticipated to be in the range of the Kushaq and priced under Rs 20 lakh.
Skoda is considering using its global MEB platform, adapting it for the Indian market, or choosing a front-wheel-drive platform. Mahindra is part of this picture, as there’s an existing agreement for Mahindra to get MEB components for its INGLO electric platform.
It’s uncertain if the new affordable EV will be based on the Kushaq, but there’s a chance it could be a smaller sub-4m SUV designed for the Indian market. While we don’t have a specific timeline, the expectation is that this affordable EV will be available in India within the next two to three years. In the meantime, we can anticipate the launch of the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) version of the subcompact SUV, positioned below the Kushaq.
